Washington Mail Voting Unchanged for 2026

Washington voters should expect the state’s established mail-voting process to continue for the November 2026 midterms.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently lifted one court order blocking President Donald Trump’s proposed mail-voting restrictions. However, the justices did not decide whether the executive order is legal. They concluded that the states challenging it had filed their case before the U.S. Postal Service completed its rules.

A separate nationwide injunction remains in effect. As a result, Washington’s county election offices currently have no new requirements. Ballots will still be mailed automatically to registered voters in all 39 counties, following the existing schedule and envelope procedures.

The proposed federal rules include new voter-data reporting, envelope and barcode requirements. Implementing those changes before November appears unlikely because key deadlines have passed and ballots are scheduled to be mailed in mid-October.

Further legal challenges are expected. The dispute could have greater implications for Washington’s elections in 2028 and beyond if the federal order survives.
